What is the Annual Fund?

The start of the school year is typically an exciting time of reengagement, filled with hope and promise for all of our students and teachers. This year is different. Whitney Young is faced with new and unprecedented challenges that require immediate attention and resources. We need help.

Reopening school this year means responding to a host of new needs related to COVID-19, and a more concentrated focus on racial justice and equity at our school. These include:
  • Recommit to Resilience—whether it is breaking down a challenging scientific formula, studying great literature, or remotely meeting with students from other countries in World Studies, our faculty needs new and improved technology and other resources to successfully execute remote learning.
  • Re-envision Reopening--Yes, the future is uncertain, but we do know that students will return to our beloved school some day and when they do, we want to greet them in a space that is fresh, inspiring, welcoming, and safe. Help turn hallway intersections into inspiring spaces such as the new Whitney Young Lobby where students can study independently or in small groups in uplifting surroundings, where clubs can meet in the open, and where teachers can break out classes into small groups in a creative setting.
  • Refocus on Equity--Our school was founded on an ideal of diversity and as the first magnet school in Chicago, we are committed to addressing racial inequities. Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee has identified outside experts that will partner with us to address issues of bias, restorative justice, and inequity. This refocus on equity will help create a culture of inclusiveness, understanding and empathy.
