HAILEY LOVE

Our next profile is Hailey Love, a 2021 WY Senior graduating this year, headed to the University of Michigan.

You are a senior! Congratulations! What do you plan to do next?
I will be attending the University of Michigan Ross school of Business majoring in business administration next year! Go blue!

Tell us about Hailey in high school. What was your experience like at Whitney Young? Why did you choose to be so involved in this Community?
I love Whitney Young with my whole heart... it’s like a second home to me. My experience was extremely enriching and I feel like I took advantage of everything that the school has to offer. I chose to be so involved in my school community because I wanted to give back to the place that gave so much to me. I worked every open house, presented to academic center classes, and interviewed on behalf of my school community because everyone at Whitney Young has supported me and made me into the young woman that I am. I just really hope that classes coming after me have that same support filled experience!

What was one important thing you learned about yourself during this year of remote learning? In all your years at Whitney Young, what was one important thing you learned about your Community?
During my year online I think that the most valuable lesson that I learned was to live in the moment whenever you can. I took care of my neighbors two sons over the quarantine and for the first time ever I had recess in high school. I got to play in the snow and paint flowers and that’s something I never thought I’d do at my age. Those experiences are some of my favorite memories this year and I’m glad that I took time to slow down and enjoy them. Over the course of my time at Whitney Young I’ve learned that it’s perfectly fine to change and evolve. Who I was as a seventh grader is different from who I am today as a senior and the journey has been really amazing.

What were some of your biggest challenges and proudest moments in building Community at Whitney Young High School? Would you do anything differently as a leader?
My biggest challenge was striking a balance. I wanted to have fun and take the most challenging classes and go to every game and be apart of every event. Most of the time I made it work but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t stressful at times. However, I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I look back on those stressful times and I’m extremely proud that I was really able to do it all and balance my high school experience well. One of my favorite moments at Whitney Young will always be going downstate to support our basketball team. I’m really big on school spirit and I screamed so loud that I lost my voice for days after. I felt really proud to be apart of a community of “champions!” 

What ideas do you have for how our Whitney Young Community can grow stronger? What advice do you have for students or families for making an impact?
I think that the start of building community is supporting one another. I hope that for decades to come the stands will be packed and that we will continue to support our fellow dolphins. My advice to anyone who’s looking to make an impact on our school community is to be true to yourself and follow your heart. The sky is the limit and all of the resources you need are in house, use them! High school years fly by, so make them count.
